Rare vintage original Hermès Gavroche scarf designed by Hugo Grygkar, one of the most prolific and celebrated Hermès artists. The iconic Les Armes de Paris design was first issued in 1954, and this is an early edition produced before artist copyright markings were introduced on Hermès scarves, making it especially desirable among collectors.Petite Carré / Gavroche format in the highly sought-after Bleu Ciel colorway — a soft sky-blue background with gold, red, and navy accents, one of the classic palettes for this design. The blue-background early editions are considered among the most collectible and valuable. The design was later reissued in 1992.Made from 100% silk twill with hand-rolled edges (roulotté). Measurements: approximately 42 × 43 cm. This versatile small carré can be worn as a neck scarf, head scarf, bag accessory, or pocket square.Very good vintage condition considering its age: strong, well-preserved hand-rolled edges/ vibrant original colors/ no holes or major flaws/ care tag removed/ light signs of age and a barely noticeable 3 cm pull. After professional cleaning, this Gavroche will truly shine again, shedding the weight of over 70 years of history. The scarf features the historic coat of arms of Paris alongside the famous Latin motto: “Fluctuat nec mergitur” — “Tossed by the waves, but does not sink.” At the center is a ship sailing through the waves, symbolizing the powerful medieval guild of Parisian river merchants who once governed much of the city’s commerce. The motto officially became a symbol of Paris on November 24, 1853, representing the resilience and enduring spirit of the city in times of hardship.
